Longwood Gardens is seeking a full-time Arborist to join our team of experienced Arborists in maintaining a magnificent collection of historic trees, on Longwood’s 1,100 acres. Our collections include 62 champion trees, the largest number of champion trees in Pennsylvania. Responsibilities include:
- Applying proper pruning techniques, executing removals, cabling and bracing
- Practicing all aspects of tree care as outlined in the ANSI A300 standards while complying with ANSI Z133 safety protocols
- Installing Longwood’s well-known Christmas light display
- Managing and assessing trees within an assigned section of the property
- Leading the Arborist team through projects within the assigned section, such as annual pruning projects or large-scale tree removals
- Supervising and training interns and volunteers on a regular basis
- Pruning (crown cleaning, crown/weight reduction, structural, pollarding, and shearing) via rope, bucket trucks, spider lifts, and/or cranes
- Supporting plant health care initiatives such as root collar excavations, root zone invigoration, and spraying or injecting
- Performing removals via rope, spikes, bucket trucks, spider lifts, and/or cranes
- Supporting storm damage clean up
- Supporting snow clearing operations using plows, brooms, blowers, and shoveling
We seek an individual with proven record of working collaboratively. Safety is of utmost importance, and experience with appropriate safety program protocols is preferred. The ideal candidate will possess:
- 3 years of climbing experience as an Arborist
- Experience in Arboriculture, Forestry or Horticulture fields
- Ability to use rope, spikes, bucket trucks, spider lifts, and cranes for tree work
- Strong knowledge of plant health care preferred
- Desire for continued learning and professional development
- An International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) Arborist Certification is preferred or a willingness to obtain in within six months of start date
- Pennsylvania Pesticide Applicator License is preferred or willingness to obtain it within 6 months of start date
- A Pennsylvania CDL Class B driver’s license is preferred or willingness and ability to obtain it within one year of start date
- General computer literacy including knowledge of Microsoft Office products
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions and able to lift a minimum of 50 pounds
